Personal Statement/Bio:
Paul Mason holds the Singing Teacher's A.R.C.T. from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and brings to his teaching practice twenty years of experience as a professional vocalist. He has sung everything from hard rock to opera, most recently appearing with the Toronto Operetta Theatre and the Juno Award-winning group Tafelmusik. He currently teaches in North York, and until 1998 was a professional soloist and Tenor section lead at St. George's United Church in Toronto.
Trained originally in Classical Guitar at the Royal Conservatory, Paul continued to the Jazz program at Humber College, where he majored in Voice and Composition, and returned to the Royal Conservatory to complete his Teacher's A.R.C.T. in Singing. He has studied Voice with David Dunbar (the 'Bel Canto' method of Cornelius Reid), Bill Vincent ('Speech-level Singing' as taught by Seth Riggs), Lenard Whiting, Albert Greer, Royal Conservatory Examiner Paul Coates and International Lyric Tenor Mark Dubois.
Paul is constantly upgrading and adding to his skills as a teacher. He recently attended a NATS workshop on Music Theatre and the Belt Voice, and an EVTS workshop on the teaching methods of Jo Estill, a seminal voice science researcher in non-classical singing styles. He is an alumnus of Richard Miller's Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy, and has added to his facility with French and German by completing a second-year Italian language course at York University.
Paul has also done voice work with Teresa Sears and David Switzer, David Smukler, and David Warrack, and work on Alexander Technique with Ron Tomarelli. He is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and subscribes to their code of ethics.
