Practice is the Key: Music Tips

Although music is fun to play, there is much more to music education than just learning songs. Music theory, technique, rhythm, and note reading are all part of a complete music education. As with any new skill, practice is the key to success. But what is the right amount of practice? The answer will vary greatly, depending on the age of the student as well as near-term and long-term music education goals. NAMTA suggests the following practicing tips for music students
Practice Tips for First Year Elementary Students. For most first year elementary players, practice routines can be light. Three days per week of home practice for 15 minutes each session will usually suffice. The first year is exploratory, and the goal is to instill a love for the instrument and an appreciation for music. As long as the student enjoys seeing their teacher on a weekly basis, then progress will come with time.
Practice Tips for Second Year Elementary Students. Second year elementary students are ready for a more disciplined practice routine. An effective home rehearsal program at this level is typically based on a 15-minute session four to five times per week. Keep in mind that focused practicing is much more productive than playing half-heartedly for 30 minutes.
Music Tips for Parents. Whenever possible, parents should listen to practice sessions and offer encouragement as students perform new songs. These mini performances can be very motivating. Here are a few more music tips to help young students make the most of their practice efforts.
Music Practicing Tips:
- Find a separate, quiet area, free of distractions where students can focus and not be interrupted
- Practice daily with purpose and set goals (example: To be ready to perform an exercise or song for a friend or parent)
- Focus on weaknesses and practice them more during a session
- Avoid rushing through a practice session
Keep in mind that a good measure of discipline is necessary to succeed at any music education program. Stay optimistic and diligent, and progress will follow.
