Personal Statement/Bio:

Joy Renée Blackstock's soprano voice is recognized for its lyrical quality, sweetness of timbre, and excellent coloratura facility.

She has performed in various recitals and full-stage productions across Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Florida. Some of her favorite roles have been Mabel in Pirates of Penzance, Cinderella in Into the Woods, Mrs. Fiorentino in Kurt Weill's Street Scene, and Laurey in Oklahoma!. Other productions in which she has been involved include Roméo et Juliette, Hansel and Gretel, Don Pasquale, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and Gallantry.

She has achieved numerous successes and awards, including being named a First Round Finalist in the 2010 Classical Singer competition (Mercer University, Georgia), 2nd place in the Central Georgia Opera Guild Competition (Macon, GA), winner of the Collegiate Concerto Competition (Hardin-Simmons University), recipient of the 2007 Sigma Alpha Iota Collegiate Honor Award (Lambda Epsilon Chapter), and two-time recipient of the Outstanding Performance Student of the Year Award (HPU) during her undergraduate studies.

Education/Training:

Graduated Cum Laude from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance.

Currently working toward a Master of Music in Performance Degree at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX.

Music is a vital part of every culture world-wide. Not only is it a beautiful way of expressing oneself, research suggests that music lessons may enhance intelligence and academic achievement, build self-esteem and improve discipline.

Weekly lessons are offered to students of all ages living in the Abilene and Brownwood areas. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Levels are offered, providing preparation for U.I.L. Solo competition, All-State competition, the college audition process, and general skills to sing all types of music well.
