Choosing the Right Music Instructor

Your music instructor should be able to demonstrate a mastery of your instrument of choice and have experience teaching your preferred music style or genre (classical, jazz, pop, rock, blues, etc.) A seasoned music educator should also be able to inspire and gauge each student’s progress.
To set the foundation for a successful student-teacher relationship, it’s best to interview the instructor before starting lessons. This can be done in person or by phone.
If you need help selecting a music instructor, contact your local music school for advice. Music schools have trained personnel who can assist you in finding a music instructor that has the right credentials and experience to achieve your goals.
Questions to consider when interviewing music teachers:
- Can you tell me about your formal education and training in music?
- How long have you been teaching?
- Do you specialize in teaching any specific age group?
- Are you experienced in the genre of music I wish to learn?
- How much daily practice time do you require from your students?
- Do lessons incorporate theory, ear training, and/or music history?
- Is an instrument provided or do I need to purchase one before I get started?
- Do you offer suggestions or help in selecting the right instrument?
- Am I required to pay after each lesson or pay monthly?
- Do you offer an introductory lesson?
- Do you offer recitals as part of your music program?
NAMTA was established to promote quality music education by making it easy (and FREE!) for students and parents to find the right music instructor or music program. After all, if a student does not take a liking to his or her music educator, the success of the music lesson will be compromised from the start.
In addition to previewing teachers and schools that have passed background checks and offer lessons in your preferred instrument and genre, you can interview several teachers or programs before making your final choice. This interview or screening process will help ensure that the music instructor or music program you select will have the demeanor and philosophy that will lead to the ideal chemistry between student and teacher.
