Personal Statement/Bio:

I have been teaching guitar lessons to beginners of all ages for the past 10 years. It's very rewarding to watch my students develop a passion for the instrument as they progress in their playing skills. A music education and the ability to play an instrument is a gift that my students will enjoy for the rest of their lives.

Education/Training:

After taking years of guitar lessons as a teenager, playing in a few rock bands, and writing and recording numerous original songs and demo tapes, I attended San Diego State University. I hold a BA in music from SDSU and I have recently begun taking classes with the goal of achieving my Masters Degree in the next three years.

Teaching Philosophy:

In order to maintain a student's enthusiasm for learning, I encourage students to choose the genre and songs they are most interested in. At the same time, however, I incorporate traditional note reading skills, scales, and a variety of common chord progressions into each student's practice session. I recommend that students take at least one lesson per week, with 30 to 60 minutes dedicated to focused practice each day. Once a student has demonstrated the ability to play three songs -- start to finish -- I encourage the student to perform in front of friends and / or family to get used to the feeling of playing before a live audience.

Music Programs:

In addition to operating my own music teaching business, I teach a Beginner's Guitar class once each week at Carmichael Middle School on a volunteer basis. I also perform at private parties, weddings, and coffee houses as a trio, with another guitarist and female vocalist.
